EXTENDICARE KAPUSKASING – MEDIA UPDATE

As of 11:00 am on Friday, January 29, Extendicare Kapuskasing has no new resident cases to report. We have received positive results for six additional team members, for a total of 14 active cases among our care team. All affected staff are recovering in self-isolation at home until cleared by public health to return to work.

The home continues to meet daily with the Porcupine Health Unit, Sensenbrenner Hospital, Ontario Health, our Local Health Integration Network team and the Ministry of Long-Term Care. All parties are working together to protect residents and staff.

In keeping with public health direction, all residents continue to isolate in their rooms, where they are being provided with meals and individual care and support. We have additional resident assistants on site today, focused on individual support, including personal care and mobility exercises within resident rooms.

ONGOING OUTBREAK DEFENSE

We will continue to test both staff and residents rigorously to identify any new instances of the virus as soon as possible. We have dedicated a Registered Nurse to lead ongoing audits of proper infection control and prevention protocols, and our screener at the front entrance is performing a hand hygiene audit on everyone coming into our home. Our partners at Porcupine Health Unit have been on-site to support our team and assist in reviewing IPAC practices.

STAFFING UPDATE

Our staffing levels remain strong on all shifts – above our normal staffing levels. In addition to those who have joined our care team this week, the members of Ontario Health’s Mobile Enhancement and Support Team were on site today helping to provide enhanced care for our residents, and building the capacity of our care team. All staff remain cohorted to a single area in the home to help prevent spread between home areas.

Our first priority, as always, is to maintain the health and safety of our residents, staff and caregivers. We will continue to keep in close contact with residents, staff and families.
